IE: no chat, browser does not freeze. FIREFOX: no chat, browser freezes. CHROME: no chat, browser freezes.
Have tried: - complete removal and reinstall of flash - no effect. - using multiple different subdomains of twitch.tv, ie: www, no, de etc - no effect. - disabled all addons from browsers - no effect. - ipconfig /flushdns - no effect.
pretty impressive twitch do not have a fix for this, reading through the comment it has been going on a while..
Well, it hasn't even been 24 hours yet but yeah, the chat is completely broken until they fix it on their side. I doubt there's any point in trying to fix it on your side as its the servers that are broken. (some, not all) If you clear your cache you might get lucky and get redirected to another server that isn't currently broken, but that's very unlikely.
I have gone to several channels with no chat loading, but other channels do have working chat, to the point it seems pretty random. I had chat briefly for about 5 minutes yesterday but it disappeared quickly and continues not to work today.
To ensure that the issue is not on my end but on twitch's end I've tried connecting directly to the IRC for my channel and the IRC channel refuses to connect as well, proving that it is not a Flash issue, it is not a browser issue, and it is not a local issue of any type, but an issue on twitch's end.
Over 200 viewers ( using different browsers) were having the same problem with chat not loading and when it did only some messages were sent/seen by others. Not only is it annoying for mods, who are doing their best to moderate a room, but the streamer could not even run ads. Apparently, this isn't an isolated incident and is on-going.
Someone at Twitch needs to resolve this problem and stop passing the blame on viewers/streamers?
@ragequittime no, I pushed everyone to this thread because the amount of duplicate threads (because barely anyone actually uses the search feature before they post) was astounding.
@arkansassy nobody is blaming the viewers/streamers, the current chat infrastructure is unstable.
@Fire sorry about that. I checked the first page and didn't see anything so I started a new thread. Thanks for keeping us informed and working hard on the problem. Any idea what is going on at this point?
@gondor81 they know it's wonky and are working on it. Likely they'll try to patch it together long enough to get the new chat finished so they can roll that out (Newchat is pretty solid so far, it's just lacking important features at the moment)
The new twitch iPad app is almost unusable . It is so bugged out. Every time I turn the iPad to chat the app crashes. Also ever time I search the app crashes. Why release the app if it doesn't even work???
hi there been having trouble with chat not loading on justin tv ...viewers manage to type one sentence then chat freezes for like 10 mins then whole chat pops up at once ..i dont have virus blockers on ..i use google chrome ..was wondering if it was to do with tech people updating servers ..its been going slow for over a month odd now ... any ideas how to fix thank you
My chat keeps refreshing on its own. I do not see other chatters comments or when people join the chat. I have to keep refreshing my room in order to see my viewers. Twitch.tv/xternx. After I refresh, chat takes about 4-5 min to load.
@arkansassy nobody is blaming the viewers/streamers, the current chat infrastructure is unstable.
Thanks for your response, Fire. That's a masterpiece of understatement there; however, I'm happy to hear twitch is "working" to resolve the problem.
As far as "nobody blaming viewers/streamers," when I read responses to problems that suggest the person use another browser, or they probably need to update their flash drive, it sounded to me like twitch personnel was kinda sorta laying the blame on viewers. *shrugs* Sorry, if I misunderstood. :)
@arkansassy a lot of those posts were from months ago when this issue first started cropping up. Rule of thumb is always to rule out clientside issues when you can :)
Let me show you what happens in IRC and Webchat on the group of servers I am connected to. Each line below is an indication of a reconnect to the chat servers, and the three are an example of over 100 I have received in a single 24 hour period via the IRC interface (make note of the timestamps):
[Thu, Apr 12, 2012 - 21:53:42] <jtv> catreina says, Visit the website and forums - Catreina.com
[Thu, Apr 12, 2012 - 21:55:48] <jtv> catreina says, Visit the website and forums - Catreina.com
[Thu, Apr 12, 2012 - 21:57:07] <jtv> catreina says, Visit the website and forums - Catreina.com
At the same time, I get the same message in webchat, which indicates that the webchat is having issues as well:
catreina says, Visit the website and forums - Catreina.com
catreina says, Visit the website and forums - Catreina.com
catreina says, Visit the website and forums - Catreina.com
catreina says, Visit the website and forums - Catreina.com
Over and over
Now, also, when this is happening, in the IRC chat one can check the status window, and there you will see a line about the "creation" date and time for the server. Whenever a disconnect happens, this creation time is RESET:
connected to jtvchat
Your host is jtvchat
This server was created on Thu Apr 12 18:53:42 2012
-
irc.justin.tv 8.2.0 w n
connected to jtvchat
Your host is jtvchat
This server was created on Thu Apr 12 18:55:47 2012
-
irc.justin.tv 8.2.0 w n
connected to jtvchat
Your host is jtvchat
This server was created on Thu Apr 12 18:56:58 2012
-
irc.justin.tv 8.2.0 w n
Note that the two creation times actually correlate to the connect messages I posted above (I am in EDT and the server is PDT, which accounts for the 3 hour difference in timestamps).
Now, the issues we are all having (and will continue to have) are because the servers they use for chat are extremely unstable. I do not know why they dont just switch to using a real IRC network and then embedding a web chat interface to use said IRC servers, similar to what own3d does.... or, I dunno, use a real IRC server for their own network. It isnt hard to use something like the unreal daemon or undernet daemon with configuration changes and tweaks to use their own databases....
Having this issue for 3 days straight now is ..... unacceptable to say the least.
Also (cannot post more in prior comment because of message length)
PS - One thing to note in IRC - when the reconnect happens, mIRC, XChat, and other IRC based programs that connect via the IRC interface sometimes start getting duplicated messages, which does not rectify with a reconnect - one must restart the IRC client to fix the issue. I have not figured out why this happens, but it is easily reproducible:
[Thu, Apr 12, 2012 - 22:12:03] <rekmond> Hey cat!
[Thu, Apr 12, 2012 - 22:12:03] <rekmond> Hey cat!
[Thu, Apr 12, 2012 - 22:13:13] <@yawnlance> Hi cat
[Thu, Apr 12, 2012 - 22:13:13] <@yawnlance> Hi cat
I have NOT seen this happen with the webchat however.
I cannot connect to other broadcasters chat. When I do, It either takes forever to load and then none or some of what I type is not going through. When I am broadcasting, my chat keeps refreshing and I am not getting messages. Please fix this for everyone.
First connecting to the chat in windows using any browser (except safari, as I don't have it installed in windows) causes me a ton of issues. I can watch the stream just fine, but the chat is extremely laggy and resource heavy. So when I type into the chat box on the site, the time it takes from hitting the enter key to it actually posting is several seconds, I've seen it take as much as 8 to 10 seconds. I have several machines and have tried them all and this happens no matter what machine I use, what browser I use. The only exception, interestingly enough, Safari on macosx. In my experience Safari in macosx gives me the most stable access to stream and chat via the site. Now being that an 8 second delay is absolutely unacceptable, the stream admin suggested the irc chat as an alternative. LOL So on I go...
Your IRC chat is horrible. The server is the most unstable server I have ever had the misfortune of using in my entire experience of using the internet, which is now over 15 years. I remember telling someone the server must be running on windows me, on a machine with 4mb of ram, but then I realized looking back, windows me was more stable than your chat servers. That is pretty sad. Having been using IRC for 15 years I have used a lot of different daemons, and have personally run my own. Each morning your server let's everyone know that you need to restart it for maintenance, not once, but 6 to 10 times over the course of 10 to 30 minutes. Again having done this a long time and been involved in it myself, I know such maintenance is unnecessary. Not to mention, over the course of a 24 hour period I experience constant server splits, disconnects from the peer, and over the last couple days in particular, a disconnect with no reconnect in sight. In the last couple of days I have been unable to use the irc for any useful chat, in fact I experience long delays, which result in splits that end in disconnects, where I am completely unable to reconnect, sometimes for hours at a time.
Because of this, I have been forced to login to the web chat and deal with its horrible functions and delays, and although it sucks appears slightly more stable. Of course it is still susceptible to random "maintenance" reboots, and moments when it appears no one is talking, only to realize that people are talking, the system just isn't working. Look people, it's time to give up the ghost. Whoever is doing your server administration does not know what they are doing, should be fired and maybe you should consider moving your servers to an environment that is more stable. I bet I could run a more stable server off my iphone. If I sound harsh, its because I am. People come here to use your services, they subscribe or watch your ads, paying you, and so demand a certain level of service. It is incumbent upon you to fix these issues as quickly and efficiently as possible.
