A question regarding framerates Twitch streams and VODs on Chrome.

Greetings. I will begin by listing some pertinent system specs:

Windows 7 x64 Professional - Fully updated
Google Chrome 19.0.1084.56 m
20mbps Down/2mbps Up Cable Connection
8GB System RAM
Intel Core i7 CPU 3.06ghz
2x ATI 6870 Video Cards

Basically here is the issue. Whenever I am watching a stream or a VOD on my second monitor [which is an Insigia 32" HDTV] I notice framerate drops in both streams and VODs. This issue is also not unique to Twitch/Justin.tv and does happen with GOMTV vods as well, however I was not able to reproduce this on YouTube. The issue only occurs when I am viewing a different browser tab that is not the tab with the video in it. If the video is playing on my second monitor and the tab is in focus on my main monitor, framerates are fine. Then I switch tabs, and the framerate drops. Is this happening for anyone else? Thanks to any who reply.

  • Also this issue does not happen on Firefox, and when using IE9 the framerates don't just drop, but the video freezes completely and the audio keeps playing.

Do you have hardware acceleration in flash enabled or disabled? ( right click -> settings )
  • It is disabled.

You are correct, from my experience, it only happens in Chrome. I couldn't figure exactly why.
What you can do is, open one chrome window just for stream/VOD you ware watching on the second monitor (TV), and then open another instance of Chrome (So you have 2 Chrome windows running), and use that on your first monitor to browse or do something else.
