Is it possible to add "Go" to the games list?

Hey TwitchTV-Team!

I stream myself playing Go online but i have a problem. I can't find the game in your games list (which is not unusual, as go is a traditional asian board game, you could compare it to chess).
It's not to big of a deal but i would appreciate if you could add the game. :)

Thank you very much

Twitch uses Giant Bomb's API to generate the game list, so once its added there it should show up on Twitch.

  • Thanks alot!
  • For what it's worth, I've also started streaming Go (under the Chess tag). Let's turn this into a community, gerprelude :)
  • I've submitted a page to Giant Bomb for Go. Assuming it gets approved, how long does it take for Twitch to pick up the change? Do you guys call the API nightly?

That would be something for @horror to answer, I think :)
  • Did this ever get answered, I noticed Lone Survivor is on Giant Bomb but I couldn't list it as the game I was playing in twitch.
  • So, my submission got rejected with the reason "We don't list board games." Of course, I look up with the first three board games that come to mind (chess, monopoly, settlers of catan), and all three of them are listed.

I'm trying to negotiate with one of the guys on there. Is there any way Twitch can sidestep them and add an entry manually to the list in addition to whatever comes from the GB API?

    Thanks :)

@apetresc games like chess are likely in the list because there are video games of those releases. If there is a videogame version of Go, you should use that in your argument to them for it to be added.

Twitch will probably not add manual entries, since it just pulls from gb and manual entries would eventually cause problems.
  • Thanks, @fire :) That's precisely what I'm doing, I'll submit some of the various digital incarnations of Go (the ones I'm streaming, specifically).

    Cheers,
    Adrian

We have plans to decouple our games list from GB, and as fans of classic games such as Go, we will be happy to manually add these games when we are able.

    @tabako nice!
  • Best news I've heard today :) Thanks a lot, @tabako, I'm looking forward to it.
  • Wooot! +1 for manual additions!
  • Without meaning to nag, how is progress on the decoupling? :)

@apetresc plans to do so do not mean it is currently being done :)

    Good news and bad news.

Good news is that the decoupling is done and adding games is pretty painless. I've added Go.

Bad news is that the text "Go" matches so many game names, that it doesn't guarantee that the actual game "Go" comes back in the result set. To see if a game is valid, we are currently just checking to see if it comes back in the result set (which it doesn't). So people can't actually change their game to Go.

I want to rewrite the javascript in the game selector to make this less dumb, but I'm not sure when I'll have time. If there is a preferred Asian language name for the game, I could add that to the list instead. But I think we should standardize on one name to be used across the site, and that should probably be the English name. I'll have to find some time to solve this correctly.

    good stuff!

@tabako the simple/quick fix would be to add it as "Go (Board Game)"

  • Awesome, tabako! Thanks so much :)

The Go community runs into the fact that "Go" is not an easily search-able or validate-able name all the time. The most common alternative is to list it as "Baduk" (the Korean name) or "Weiqi" (the Chinese name), with the former being much more common. On Twitch, though, I feel like using "Go (Board Game)" is probably the best option, since it leaves no ambiguity for anyone who is looking for it on an autocomplete list (and it's exactly what Wikipedia lists it as)

"Go (Board Game)" has been added to the games list. You need to type an exact match into the game selector, so make sure you type the parenthesis. Otherwise, enjoy :)
  • Thanks a lot, tabako! The having to hit a space in order to see the autocomplete kind of hurts discoverability, but that's okay. I'm super-pumped to start streaming under the proper tag :)
