Own chat does not auto-refresh/update text

I've seen that this is a recurring problem with twitch.tv and I've sifted through all of the posts I could find that offered various 'fixes'. My problem still exists and ONLY relates to MY channel. I can view and use real-time chats in other streams.

History:
* I am in Australia and accessing www.twitch.tv (i.e. not a subdomain)
* I have tried both Firefox version 11 and Internet Explorer version 9. I do not have Chrome installed, but will do so if someone can prove to me it's a SURE fix (I've read people complaining of the same issue with Chrome)
* I have done a clean installation of Adobe Flash
* I have adjusted the various Adobe Flash Player Manager settings and set relative permissions for www.twitch.tv
* I have tried accessing my chat from irc clients (mIRC, Mibbit)
* I have tried the Firefox IRC add-on, Chatzilla

None of the above has fixed the problem, as outline below:

The problem:
* I can post to my own channel and see the post immediately
* If I popout the chat window, it will not always show me the same messages as the imbedded one
* I CANNOT see anyone else's posts without refreshing the page (popout version, or imbedded one)
* Posting from the imbedded or popped-out version does NOT display in any IRC clients I have used. However, I can post FROM those clients and then manually refresh my imbedded/popout chat window to see those posts
* Refreshing the page does NOT always display posts
* People who post to my chat finally appear some time later and are marked as "timed-out"

The Solution:
(This is where support staff come in, I'm hoping....)

If you are logged in with the same account in both IRC and the webchat and you post a message in one of them (either web or irc), you will not see your message repeated back to you in the other clients you are logged into but other people in the chat will still see it.

As for the bug with the chat not updating, its been reported by quite a lot of people but honestly we don't really have a solution for you. I'm hoping that one the new chat backend is finished, this issue will be fixed as well. In some cases its been caused by the particular router the user is using. The only "solution" would be to connect with an IRC client which shouldn't experience that problem.

It also seems to affect users outside of the US more than others. So it might be related to longer latency to the chat servers causing the connection to drop and not reconnect.

  • Ah thanks for the info.

Just to update things, I've been having some success with using IRC, but still have disconnect issues (usually 1-2 per hour). Also, about 15 minutes ago I stopped receiving messages altogether and only found out when I opened the web chat version again. I now have to resort to having both the IRC and web chats open just to cross-check between the two.

If the problem is indeed caused by geographic location, are there going to be any tests done on the new chat backend before it is released? If so, consider my hand raised ;)

When we're you getting disconnects in IRC? Yesterday I was getting a lot of disconnects from certain servers so it might have related to work/issues on Twitch's end.
  • Sorry, I didn't make a note of the specific times. Will do so next session.

New problem just cropped up: I'm unable to connect via IRC at all. I keep getting 'connection refused' errors, even though my settings are identical to those I was using successfully last night.
  • Same problem here with IRC. In this case, Mibbit. I was getting the "terminated" message before the beginning text came up, then it worked once although I lost it about a minute later, and now I'm getting a "could not connect" message I've never seen before.
  • I'm thinking it might be a wider chat issue as I'm now lagging in chats on ANY stream (not just my own). It's fine for a few seconds, then lags for about 2-3 minutes before flooding through a bunch of messages. According to what I'm seeing people saying, it seems to be a problem for several folks (while others have no issues at all).
  • I don't get the flood mentioned above, I just stop receiving messages altogether after about 2 minutes on the channel. Refreshing the page fixes it - for another 2 minutes. Progamers have also experienced this.

Streaming or watching a stream isn't worth it without the chat :(
I'm hoping for a quick fix from you lot.
  • I am having the exact same problem as kuvasz describes, and also periodically that the chat doesn't load at all.
  • Now working perfectly :)

edit: maybe not... for example TLO's chat keeps resetting, I get his welcoming message regularly and some messages come in bulk after a while... but definitely an improvement to what was happening yesterday and before that
